Glad that I was able to meet him and hear him at the Texas Book Festival in Austin some years ago. Said he could have written more if he hadn't spent so much time chasing cows and goats! I think he had a very good life indeed.
Goodbye to a River. I’ve read it half a dozen times and always finished with a certain amount of awe. Here’s a guy trying “to explain Texas to [himself]” and in the process wrote one of the greatest books in American literature.
