Not only was THE CONQUEROR John Wayne's most embarrassing role, but Wayne and many of his co-stars and the film's crew died of various forms of cancer. Some speculate it was all the Nevada sand that was used on the set (trucked in from around the area the nuclear tests were taking place). Whatever the cause, that movie was ill-omened no matter how you look at it.
Not just the sand. They did their location work in a part of Utah that was downwind of some above ground nuclear tests that were going on during the time they were shooting the picture. Cancer rates on that film crew including extras in Utah who didn`t make the trip to California were higher than the national average. And while Wayne and most of the rest of the cast smoked, the cancers that killed them tended to be soft tissue cancers not associated with smoking.
