Where are Joanna Russ? "James Tiptree, Jr".? C. L. Moore? Leigh Brackett? This list should have been titled Female Fantasy Authors Who Have Sold the Most Books.
I'm glad they mentioned one of my favorites, Connie Willis, but Jerry is right: A list of female SF writers without Russ or Tiptree really has no credibility.
My dittos and contras: LeGuin has got to be at or near the top, because she has that greatest of writerly gifts: her words exceed her ideas! Appreciate Willis immensely, but can't take seriously any such list without "Tiptree", Moore, or Brackett! Thankfully, Atwood was Not included.
I certainly agree with not seeing Joanna Russ and James Tiptree, Jr on the list... both are giants... some names are gonna fall off... or be forgotten... that is why in the comments there is space to remember... I remember Lisa Tuttle and Vonda McIntyre...
The only clearly ridiculous inclusion is Anne Rice, which the compiler seemed overly apologetic for.
Though several of the others have been responsible for a lot of pedestrian work, and Lessing's sf is probably the least of hers.
Atwood certainly has weighed in comparably to several of the folks on the list.
Mary Shelley is a notable overlooked candidate, too. (As are Carol Emshwiller, Kate Wilhelm, and everyone else cited so far in these comments...even the least accomplished of whom is in every way a better writer than Rice.
