There was a gal I heard speak in Arizona who writes romances. She had a received a translation, sent by mail, of one of her novels she did not know was translated. The publisher apologized, "Oh, what a mistake! I'm so sorry. We'll send you a check."
Later on the author received a couple more different translations the publisher had also "mistakenly" not told her about.
Nick Carter was, in my case at least, work for hire. I didn't share in any of the foreign sales. There were at least 5 of them that I know about, probably more.
