I sympathize with the authors affected by this (short-lived as the situation was), but if reports are to be believed, Macmillan forced the situation by demanding that Amazon stop selling selected ebooks (those on the NYT best-seller list) at a discount, even though they were paying Macmillan the same either way.

You can argue that Amazon's response was uncalled-for or over-reacting, but it got people's attention.

Apparently it's not over. The Macmillan books still haven't returned to Amazon.

I've had several normally credible people tell me that books they wanted have returned in the last day or two (with higher prices). I don't know this from my personal experience. The ones I've looked for have still been missing. It's hard to tell what's going on due to so many subsidiaries and such. The ones people seemed to be most upset about were the Stephanie Plum series, but the ebooks seem to have another publishers name on them. I was told they had disappeared but many have now returned. I don't know what that tells us.
