I never thought Dr Zhivago was a very good movie and I thought Apocalypse Now stunk. I'd put The Maltese Falcon in the #1 slot, and they don't even list it.
Wow. Yet another Highly Questionable list, from MOBY DICK to SCHNIDLER'S LIST, and very much including THE SHINING, the mature Kubrick's weakest film. The omission of the third MALTESE FALCON, given the presence of the first BIG SLEEP, is almost inexplicable. GREAT EXPECTATIONS, the Lean-directed one, anyone?
Ha. My eye skipped right over its citation. Well, its placement at the top of this list is reasonably fair...now if only the rest of the list was reasonable.
Then there are the few films which improve on their novels or other books, such as the original THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE.

Certainly one of the best of all time. It's the book on film, right down to the dialog.
"The Guns of Navarone"
Yes, that's another great one.
