The 1947 novel by Dorthy B. Hughes is terrific and one of my favorite noir novels. I understand the movie has a major change from the book which makes them two stories united by a common title. I still want to see the movie sometime.
I first saw the movie about 40 years ago, before I read the book. I was surprised when I read the novel, to say the least. Bogie's good in the movie, though.

Gloria Grahaem was perfectly cast here and was just terrific. She had a good career but I think she should have been a superduperstar.
Drags a bit at times, but a powerful ending. I understand diector Nicholas Ray had trouble controlling his temper, too.
