Mexia, Texas, 1953

My hometown has always been on the cutting edge, as you can see from this column in the local paper back on March 13, 1953. Already fielding a soccer team, and if you look long enough, you can find the name of one of the players. Yes, that's right, me. Hard to believe. This was one of my few athletic endeavors, but nobody can say I wasn't ahead of my time. And just in case you were wondering what was showing at the local theaters on that day, well, I've thrown some movie listings in for good measure.

As much as I hate to say it, "cool" is not exactly a word often used to describe me.

Heh. Last week my twenty year old son showed his g/f a pic. of me in all my early 1970's longhaired splendor. He said to her, "That's my dad when he thought he was 'groovy'. "

I wonder if soccer will ever take off big in the USA. Your world cup squad are really good. Over here in the UK it's huge but then we invented it.

I'm pretty sure very few people in Texas even knew what soccer was back in 1953.

What? You knew Buddy Prather? I'm impressed.

I've always considered you cool and I hear the ladies consider you hot. No small feat.

I'd like to know who you heard that from.

I can't mention names, but if you go to Malice Domestic and look for a woman with blue hair you're home free.
