"Massive appeal in the early '90s"? I'm not sure the appeal was all that massive, at least after all the "Who killed Laura Palmer" media hype in the first season subsided. Ratings clearly were not good enough over the long run. Personally, I thought the show was strongest in the first season, when Lynch gave free rein to the absurdities and creepy atmospherics. It went downhill for me when it started trying to make sense by bringing in the Black Lodge/White Lodge quasi-theosophy crap as an explanation for the goings-on. The biggest influence may have been its model among producers and writers for the "quirky" shows that followed afterward, "X Files," "Picket Fences," "Northern Exposure," "Eerie, Indiana," etc. Heather Graham had a recurring role in the second season.

They may have been trying to make sense, but after the first season I often had no clue as to what was going on.

I think Lynch was given more freedom to run wild in the second season, when TWIN PEAKS achieved not-quite-record-low ratings for ABC...among that good night for televsion no one was watching, THE YOUNG RIDERS, CHINA BEACH, TWIN PEAKS.
