Happy Birthday H. L. Mencken!

Too bad he's not around today. I'd like to hear what he'd have to say. You can read about him here if you're so inclined. Or read Connie Willis's very entertaining "Inside Job," instead. Part of it is here. The rest you'd have to find.

Atop all else, without HLM we wouldn't've had BLACK MASK, and today have ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE nor THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, or at least they would be less likely. Of course, we wouldn't've had the later Nazi issues of AMERICAN MERCURY after Lawrence Spivak sold it to the clueless, but a small price to pay, I think (and those latter two decades ate up some funds that might've been otherwise given to Birchers or Pat Robertson).

In light of Geo W Bush & the neo cons in office it's also good to remember what Mencken said : "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."
