The Liquidator Series -- R. L. Brent

Vince Keenan kindly read a Liquidator novel so I wouldn't have to. I noticed in the picture that the book was published by Ace/Charter. The Liquidator novels I own were published by Award Books. Maybe when Award went out of business, Ace took over some titles. Or maybe the Liquidator novels were so good that Ace reprinted them. As I mentioned to Vince in my comment, the idea of a lone vigilante trying to wipe out the Mafia is so startlingly original that Ace probably couldn't resist. At any rate, here's one of the Award Books covers.

Yes, Charter took over quite a few series from Award, the most notable being the Nick Carter books. Dan Roberts and I will have an article on Award books in an upcoming issue of Gary Lovisi's Paperback Parade, along with as complete a checklist of the Award books as we could come up with. Award was a carryover from Beacon, by the way, so the heritage involved with their books is quite remarkable, he remarked. Steve L.

That's great, Steve. I'm eagerly looking forward to the article.

I think the biggest difference between this and the zillion similar series is that this had a certain amount of southern hicksploitation.

Well, you can't beat that.

Was there any relation between these books and the movie THE LIQUIDATOR starring Rod Taylor (with a kick-ass, faux Goldfinger-esque theme sung by Shirley Bassey)?

That movie was based on John Gardner's Boysie Oakes novel, I think, Lee.

Steve's comment helps to explain why UPD, the Award Books folks and therefore presumably, whether under that name or not the Beacon Books folks, bought the GALAXY group of sf magazines when Guinn sold 'em, given the previous set of GALAXY NOVELS Beacon issued. A pre-existing relationship...leaving aside the mild irony of Ejler Jakobsson following Frederik Pohl as editor of GALAXY and IF even as he had as editor of SUPER SCIENCE decades before, if rather more immediately following than with the Popular magazine's revival.

Ah, the interconnections of the publishing world!
