HOUSTON - For the first time since 1972, the United States is planning to fly to the moon, but instead of a quick, Apollo-like visit, astronauts intend to build a permanent base and live there while they prepare what may be the most ambitious undertaking in history — putting human beings on Mars."

Me, too. But I'd like to believe.
The space station is a failure mainly because the people with the sharp pencils were more concerned with costs than in letting it succeed. To allow the station to function it needs a maintenance staff of three astronauts. For that purpose a dormitory module was designed to house more astronauts. One of the early things cut was, you guessed it, the dormitory module. The problem that is going to face any ttempt at a functional moonbase is the same thing - administrators who want to keep costs down and as a result cut things that are necessary. Makes you weep.
