I'm Writing a C&W Song

All I have so far is the title, but I think it's a guaranteed hit: "I Thought I Was Number One in Your Heart, Till You Called Me Number Two."

Feel free to write the verses in your spare time.

Aw, shucks, Bill...Hate to spoil it for you, but decades ago the late, great Roger Miller wrote a song titled, "If I Can't Be Your Number One, Then You're Number Two with Me." I made a reference to it in one or another of the "Affair" novels; think it was "The John Lennon Affair."

Roger was a friend and, at some point in my music PR days, a client. A warm, wonderful, down-home guy with a rapid-fire wit that frequently bordered on brilliant.

He died too soon...

I love the loopy titles of some C&W songs. One of my favorites is "My Wife Ran Away With My Best Friend, And I Miss Him."

...oughta take a rope and hang me. High from the highest tree, woman, would you weep for me? Sorry, I see the words dang me and Roger Miller and I can't help myself. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only woman on the planet who knows practically all the words to Roger Miller's Greatest Hits.

I saw Roger Miller in person in the very early 1960s, back before he became "King of the Road." He was one of the opening acts for Slim Whitman (Yes, I've seen Slim Whitman live. Three times.) I was already a fan because I liked Miller's early songs better than most of his later ones. He had a tough time with the audience, though, including a heckler or two. I still remember that he told one woman, "I don't yell through the bedroom window when you're at work." Funny, the little things that stick with you.
