I found a couple of Modesty Blaise paperbacks in the Bouchercon dealers' room, so naturally I picked them up. There's no better company on a long plane ride than Modesty and Willie Garvin. The one I read on the way home is THE SILVER MISTRESS. (I have no idea what the title means or how it fits anything in the book.) Pure escapist fantasy, smooth writing, exotic locations, entertaining characters, humor: what more could you ask for? OK, so the cover's not bad, either.
