And most are older movies made in B&W! I haven't seen some of these, but Psycho, Night of the Demon (except for the cheesy effects) and especially The Haunting are standouts. And yet they are scary without tons of gore and blood everywhere. I think it says a lot about directors today that they can't use pacing, atmosphere, etc. to build tension, they have to swing open a door and show a disemboweled corpse.
