I have no respect for that attitude, those books don't look loved, they look mistreated, abused, disrespected.
When I was younger I did dogear books, but I learned a long time ago. My mother drove me nuts for years bending down pages before she stopped. Now I have dozens of bookmarks. My library gives them away and I pick up a lot at Bouchercon.
There used to be (maybe there still is) a blog called "Found in Books". It was run by the owner of a used book store and he would post pictures of the odd, interesting, and sometimes rare things he would find in his inventory.
I've occasionally found a $1 bill in a book, maybe 5 times. My favorite find--and I think I have mentioned this before--was a card describing the services offered to passengers on the 20th Century Limited, between Chicago and New York. I'm pretty sure it was from the late 1940s, and includes stenographic and typing services, among other things. I've also found letters--not in envelopes--but unfortunately they were uniformly boring.

I once found two old stamps, a 1-cent and a three-cent. I looked them up, and found collectors buying and selling them for almost a dollar!
