I always thought that Ken Curtis missed a chance, in his post-Gunsmoke days, by not getting a shave and a suit, and playing boss/chief/officer parts, with the occasional side trip to variety and talk shows for a song or three. Even now, many Gunsmoke fans don't know that Curtis put in time as a Big Band singer - briefly with Tommy Dorsey, later with the Rippling Rhythms of Shep Fields - all this before the Sons of the Pioneers. I guess that Ken was having too much fun at personal appearances, coming onstage as Festus, talking for a half-hour or so, then coming out with that baritone ...
