I think it's in Allison Bechtel's FUN HOME that a character says (paraphrase) there comes to most people that day when you acknowledge that you are never going to read REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PASSED.

That day came to me long ago.

I wondered about The Lord of the Rings...the estimated word count for it is only 750,000...so 100,000 words short of the #10 book on this list. And I have read LOTR (more than once).

I have never attempted Proust. I have never thought that I would attempt Proust.

Well, then Don will be no competition for Deb in the All-England Summarize Proust Competition.

"I never read Proust. Who wrote it?" -- D. Trump

"Marcel Proust had an haddock. And if you are calling the author of A la Recherche du Temps Perdu a looney, I shall have to ask you to step outside!" --Monty Python

I knew I could count on Deb.

Animal House, Monty Python, MST3K, Blackadder...the list goes on.

I have a cunning plan... .

And here I thought that Stephen King, Don Robertson, George R. R. Martin, and Vikram Seth might conceivably make such a list. Not even in the ballpark, apparently...
