. . . was November 22, a day that became famous for another event that cast a shadow over her birthday from then on. She was born 100 years ago, and I still think about her all the time.
My best friend since about 1962 was born on November 22, 1947. Howard and I were in class--different subjects--when we each heard about JFK being shot.
My heartfelt sympathy about your mother, Bill.
(I still miss my Dad too. The pain eases a little but never completely goes away.)
My sister was born on September 11 (she was actually on leave, celebrating her birthday at my parents' house when the planes hit the twin towers, she was recalled to duty immediately). Even now, it's hard to celebrate her birthday on that date with much gusto. She usually celebrates on the closest weekend to her actual birthday.
I don't let sad historical days color my outlook on happy occasions. My birthday is the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, but that has never cast a pall on it.

My grandmother and my brother were both born on Pearl Harbor Day.

My mother's Aunt Evelyn, who was about the same age (she died at 94), actually resembled your mother if the picture is any indication.
The picture looks just like her.
What a beauty.
