Good book about a struggling young writer in 1930s Los Angeles. And for film noir fans, the setting is Bunker Hill when it was a seedy, rundown neighborhood, before it was redeveloped into glass towers.
Love that book! And Fante all the way around. So much that I got his address and wrote to him. Unfortunately, he was very sick and never wrote back, but that book touched me deeply. And love the cover on this version.

At a glance, I guessed the cover illustration was by the great James Avati, but I was wrong; it's Harry Schaare. Very nice in any case.
One of my favorite novels. Fante was one of the finest writers of his generation. For all the bleakness of his work he did well in Hwood.
