The notion that getting ripped off by Knopt, not to mention Martin Greenberg at Gnome Press who was not Martin H. Greenberg, was somehow nobler than writing for Gold Medal or Ballantine is one of those puzzling artifacts of the era...even if the hardcovers looked prettier on one's shelves.

I think the notion was fostered by the traditional publishers. Like today.
