Yes, that would be my home town, Pittsfield, MA, where it's recorded to 1st be called Base Ball, rather than Town Ball, Cricket, and the other games it evolved from. It did indeed "formalize" in the mid 1840's, long since having been played in various forms, and early "rules" were fun and much different than today.
