I still remember my surprise watching performance footage of this song when I saw the distinctive jangley lead instrument was an autoharp. Previously I had only known the autoharp in elementary and junior high being played by lady teachers who strummed it as accompaniment as it rested on their desk or table-top. Sebastian cradled to his chest as he hunched over it and sang.
This is a defining song from my late teen years. "...like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock 'n roll."
I was nodding at everything Rick said. I very much remember a music teacher with an autoharp leading us in such classics as Reuben and Rachel or Goober Peas.
Did you know that John Sebastian was almost the third member of Crosby, Stills, and Nash? He didn't think his voice fit in and suggested they try Graham Nash.

I was listening to their Greatest Hits a couple of weeks ago. They had quite a few, including the ultimate summer song, "Summer in the City."
The summer that came out - 1966 - was my first summer working in the city. I was 17. And boy was that song appropriate in that very, very hot summer.

I like both of those a lot. Also "Nashville Cats" and "Rain on the Roof."
