I've seen two of these and liked both of them a lot.

I think I saw all but 3. Found them all enjoyable. Surprised they didn't list John Carter. Loved it too!

Count me as being surprised that they didn't list JOHN CARTER, which would've been the best of all of them. But I really liked CUTTHROAT ISLAND and SAHARA, and while I didn't think JACK THE GIANT SLAYER and STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS were terribly memorable, I certainly thought they did what they set out to do. This is further proof of William Goldman's dictum that, in Hollywood, nobody knows anything.

Always surprised #1 wasn't better received. I remember enjoying that a great deal.

I enjoyed SAHARA. It was a fun ride. As for THE LONE RANGER, Clayton Moore is rolling in his grave.

When I think of surprising box-office failures I think of stuff like DUCK SOUP and TO BE OR NOT TO BE ('42)-- hilarious films that bombed because they were too contemporary and made during "interesting" times.

As you Constant Readers know, I'm a big fan of CUTTHROAT ISLAND. I'm also like SAHARA a lot. And of course JOHN CARTER is a big favorite here, too.

I thought Cutthroat Island and Lone Ranger both terrible.
Can't understand the love for John Carter here. Didn't do it for me. Not an awful movie but not very memorable. Found Sahara okay, probably the best on this list.

If I'm reading the article correctly, most of these movies were "bombs" because of production and advertising costs which, balanced against box office, could not be recouped. Under that system, even a movie that does respectful box office is gonna end up looking like "Zzyzyx Road" on the balance sheet.

I think that's the case with JOHN CARTER, Deb. Among many other things.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Steve here. We tried to watch CUTTHROAT ISLAND but found it unwatchable. Also, JOHN CARTER was a snore. Perhaps if I'd read the books as a kid it would have been different. Forget THE LONE RANGER. It was embarrassing.
