I was a big fan of Mike Nichols' work. He pretty much worked right up to the end of his life.

He did two Broadway shows in the last three years, so even though he hadn't directed a movie since 2007 he was - as George said - still working.

He had a hell of life, but he will always have a place in my heart just for his answer to the question - asked by James Lipton on Inside the Actor's Studio - "What is a sound or noise that you hate"? Without a seconds hesitation, Nichols said "leaf blower". A great man.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Williams, now Mike Nichols--we've lost some real heavy-hitters this year.
