Hey Bill...would have been happy to see Hoffman walk off with the Oscar for his excellent pseudo-Hubbard portrayal in The Master...hope this doesn't alter his chances either way.
Main thing is that we lost one of our finest and most versatile contemporary actors. 'Tis a shame

Sad, way too young. Drugs kill and they hit our youth the hardest. I don't know what is going on in Colorado and Washington. They are letting the door crack open and I fear the harder stuff will follow.

August...pot smoking doesn't lead to heroin use. People who use heroin don't have time to worry about pot. Marijuana doesn't offer oblivion. They might try pot, but it would be like saying lite beer leads to binge drinking.

Have to wonder what made him want to bliss out...how long he had the habit.

Sorry, when we start saying that any illegal drug is OK to use,we are sending the wrong message to the youth of America. Did you think that Hoffman started with Heroin? I've seen the distruction of lives because of drug abuse. The hard stuff & pot.

When we pretend that laws will stop people who want to mess themselves over, or seek some sort of alternative to the way they feel now through chemical intake, whether it be alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cough syrup, or heroin (or for that matter the caffeine I abuse regularly), we are fooling ourselves, and setting in motion the mechanisms that put people in jail for no good reason and make it more difficult for those who need help to get help. No, August, you missed my point completely--I doubt that heroin was the first drug Hoffman tried. What I said was, it wasn't because marijuana led him or most other heroin users to heroin...it was because marijuana wasn't what he was after. Heroin apparently was. The plant and the refined poppy extract don't have the same effect at all. And while some people can manage to become spacey and aimless while smoking pot, I somehow doubt that the pot was the major cause of that. I've seen the destruction of lives due to all sorts of chemicals. Making their use even more destructive by making it something to shut people into hell on Earth for, as prison is, is not the way to fix that.
