NYTimes.com: Mavis Gallant, an acclaimed short-story writer who was abandoned as a child and later left Canada for Europe, where she made her name writing about the dislocated and the dispossessed, died on Tuesday at her home in Paris. She was 91.

I've read several of Mavis Gallant's short stories. I hadn't known she was an abandoned child.
I read one of her collections. It was not for me.
I've liked what I've read, but it didn't stick with me too clearly. Shall have to look back into her work.
