Lawrence Welk pro'bly figured with the name Jesus in the song it had to be totally ok, especially if it was on the charts. And If I know musicians, everyone else in the band likely gleefully encouraged this. And besides, if you said to Welk, "But this is about dope smoking" he'd start interrogating YOU and then it could get real messy real quick.

Perhaps they thought - if indeed they thought - it meant this, which I found in the dictionary:
