12 Film Directors Who are Waiting by the Phone

12 film directors who don't seem to get the call - Den of Geek: "Hollywood can be a brutal place to work. Even if you have a string of hits as long as your arm, one flop can get you yanked off the rolodex in double quick time. Joe Dante, John Carpenter, and Peter Hyams are other "Once hot, now not" examples. Unless you're a brand name like Spielberg or a critics' darling like Altman, it seems difficult to have any long-term traction. In the action and horror genres, styles of filmmaking have changed so much that the veteran guys are probably seen as out of touch and, well, boring.

I assume the writer wants to evoke sympathy for all this wasted talent, but to me nearly all those names evoke the horrors of twenty years of mall rat cinema...most of their box office hits as dreadful as the big bombs...as far as their career doldrums, with the exception of Walter Hill--who is a writer-director who has himself generated from story or script many of his films, unfortunately many bad ones among the good--most of these directors are merely hired guns, with no stories to tell, no themes to explore, highly replaceable when their luck runs out and always in competition with the promising newcomer. And the question remains, if most of those on the list got a job tomorrow would they make a good movie or merely be employed again.
