I kind of question their definition of "War Film" at times. It's very loose. Classics like Fail Safe and On the Beach and The Enemy Below should fit in there somewhere.
But then, these are the same folks who list The Battle for Algiers as a documentary. It's nothing of the sort.
Obviously a list made by young fuggheads. Apocalpse Now (except for the first half) and The Deer Hunter sucked, IMHO. Schindler's List and Casablanca were not war movies, they were movies made with a wartime setting. The Gladiator was an MTV version of Spartacus. Sands of Iwo Jima is ranked too low, as is Bataan. If they wanted an accurate list they should have asked me. I know about these things. Trust me.
DId I saw Bataaan was rated too low? I made that comment before checking the entire list, and expecting to find it on there someplace. But noooooo! It's not listed at all. This is a really assinine list.
Not a totally horrible list - unlike what the AFI usually puts out - in that most of my arguments are about position not actually being on the list. The Cruel Sea deserves to be much higher, and where are The Immortal Batallion, Battle of the River Plate and The Big Parade?
As a young(ish) fugghead, I disavow this list. Samuel Fuller's The Big Red One at #98? The original 1980 cut deserves to be higher than that, the recently restored version even moreso. And where are Fuller's other war films like The Steel Helmet and Fixed Bayonets?
Not only is Paths of Glory ranked too low, but Attack! (1956) and Go Tell the Spartans (1978) aren't even on this list. Looks like these "fuggheads" need to see more movies.

They do seem to have a rather, er, expansive definition of "war movie" if Casablanca and Schindler's List are in there.
And Paths of Glory should definitely be at least in the top five.
ISTR Kelly's Heroes, one of my favorite guilty pleasures, is in there somewhere.

I've always disliked Apocalypse Now intensely, so it wouldn't make my list, period.
Overall, however, I'd agree with Brent McKee that it's not a totally horrible list, but they could have done a lot better.
