The experience of the second world war was often stamped in their faces and character. Compare their faces and demeanor to the blank-faced, self-indulgent pretty boys who are today's crop of actors.

Hardly a complete list - I can name at least three who aren't mentioned: Capatain James Doohan, Royal Canadian Artillery; Captain George O'Brien, US Navy (World War I, World War II, Korea); Colonel Ed MacMahon, US Marine Corps (World War II, Korea).

I read the list and sent off my suggestion to Ms. Meyer before I read the comments here, so I didn't see Brent's mention of Doohan.

I told her the story of how he had his middle finger shot off during the invasion of Normandy, and how in later years he would say that he gave the finger to Hitler.

I met him once during an FX sci-fi charity show. That was the first time I ever learned of his injury, since it was never shown during 'Star Trek'. In fact, they used a "stunt hand" during one shot when they needed a close-up of his hand.....
