NYTimes.com: Bryan Forbes, an English film director best known for “The Stepford Wives,” the 1975 Hollywood thriller about women transformed into docile electronic incarnations of themselves, has died at his home in Surrey, England. He was 86.

He directed a much better film early on,the brilliant Seance On A Wet Afternoon, still one of the most intriguing plots I've ever encountered. And the acting was equal to the story and direction.
That was the one I thought of first too, when I saw the obit here Mr. Gorman. SEANCE and THE L-SHAPED ROOM starring Leslie Caron from 1962.
Like a number of other British directors of the 1960s, something personal about their work was lost when they became "international" directors...
