About two years before his death I bought extras of all three at a huge used book fair in Mission Hills CA he was appearing at and he autographed them for me.<br /><br />I wanted desperately to tell him how much his writing had meant to me my whole life. As I started to he smiled sadly and pointed at his ears. The woman with him--I believe his wife Karen--said "He's almost totally deaf." I started my little speech again, very very loudly. He heard me, thanked me, and smiled.
