Clearly, Philip Roth wrote The Great American Novel. (https://www.amazon.com/Great-American-Novel-Philip-Roth/dp/0679749063/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484244015&sr=8-1&keywords=philip+roth+the+great+american+novel)
But what about the book Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens? He is a talented writer and his books are very interesting. This book can be found right here at https://bookkooks.com/where-the-crawdads-sing-review/

But seriously. That's overall not a bad list (I agree with Jeff about American Psycho), but I am surprised no one mentioned The Catcher in the Rye.
I thought it was pretty good, too. Covers a lot of ground.
I agree, especially as I have read quite a few of them.
Always partial to Lonesome Dove myself. It seems to say more about the American character than any novel I can think of.
Where's RYAN RIDES BACK? Some list. Pfui!
Anonymous: Amen to that!
