I never liked American Pie. Casting Jagger as the Devil is ludicrous. Rock is a continuum changing constantly. The Fifties were a relatively peaceful time so the songs of that era were generally about young love and fun. Name changed everything and, to me, anyway, the Stones reflected their era far better than the Beatles ever did. There are a lot of Beatles songs I like but none of them ever opened a vein, that's for sure.
The Beatles always seemed to me like the clever kids in school, the ones who were smart but also smart-alecky, the ones who got in trouble but whom the teachers secretly liked. The Stones were like the guys smoking in the boy's room and slashing the occasional tire.
