An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Selling candy didn't raise much money last year, so a Goldsboro middle school is selling grades.

A $20 donation to Rosewood Middle School will get a student 20 test points - 10 extra points on two tests of the student's choosing. That could raise a B to an A, or a failing grade to a D.

I don't need more $10 a roll wrapping paper, or bad candy for $12 a box, or an $18 ceramic bird house or even a $20 calendar that I can then have to make myself (seriously!) but this is nuts.

"I'd like to buy an A, please...."

Quoting the article--

"Shepherd rejected the suggestion that the school is selling grades. Extra points on two tests won't make a difference in a student's final grade, she said."

Depending on how the test/exam is weighted, it most certainly can. If she can’t figure that out, maybe principal isn’t the right career for her.

I'm not sure if this is worse than social promotion, except only the kids who hustle would benefit, right?

Only in America ...

A friend and I went to a local high school carnival. I was about 25 at the time. They had a kissing booth. A couple of cute young ladies were offering smooches at 25 cents a pop. What the hey, I said, anything for a good cause. I put down my quarter and the girl offered her lips. I expected a little peck. Instead, she almost swallowed my face. For a long time.
Wish I'd had a tenner I didn't need.
