Top 50 scariest horror movies of all time - Halloween movies - Boston.com: "Top 50 scariest movies of all time"

I debated about even putting this one on the blog, but I figured I might as well.

Did this guy simply reach into a DVD bin and pull 50 titles at random.

I'm glad you posted this, Bill...these lists always lead to the liveliest discussions.

Of the films on this list that I've seen (about half, I'm guesstimating) they do deliver the goods...with the following exceptions:

The Amityville Horror - You have to be kidding. Lame as all get out.

Altered States - Bizarre...but not frightening as they'd have you believe.

Hellraiser - I thought this film was boring.

The Shining - I still can't figure out why people rank this film so high. I laughed all the way through it.

The Thing - An interesting take on the 1951 version (and far more faithful to the source) but I didn't find it all that scary.

Among the surprises on this list are Jesus Camp (a seriously f**ked-up film, to be sure) and Quatermass and the Pit (one of my all-time favorites).

I never saw Event Horizon, but a friend of mine complained it "wasn't evil enough."

And I love the description of The Mothman Prophecies: "Strange things are happening in Point Pleasant, WV." Coming up: water is wet.

When I looked through the list, I didn't see THE HAUNTING. If that's not on there, well,. . .

Um... "Willy Wonka"? Not only is not scary at all, it's not even very good anyway.

And where's Murnau's "Nosferatu"? It still holds up 86 years later.
