Maybe it's schlubby critics who identify with Giamatti's schlubby characters who sometimes, inexplicably, end up with hot girlfriends (like Virginia Madsen in SIDEWAYS). I have the same reaction to Philip Seymour Hoffman (substitute Marisa Tomei in BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD). I don't see Lansdale mentioned in the interview.
