Frank Deford, R. I. P.

NY Daily News: Legendary Sports Illustrated scribe Frank Deford who won over a legion of fans with witty writing and colorful commentary and launched the nation’s only daily sports newspaper died Sunday.  He was 78.

Big fan of his written as well as his television work. This sucks.

I read his book about his young daughter dying of cystic fibrosis. Very moving.

During the years I was a subscriber to Sports Illustrated I never missed his articles and commentary, often reading those items first. A truly great sports writer, and by all accounts a fine man.

I believe there was a TV movie adaptation of the book.

I was coming here to mention the book about Deford's daughter--but I see Jeff beat me to it, as usual. I used to listen to Deford on NPR and I remember when Bob Edwards interviewed him about that book...I don't know how either of them made it through the interview without crying--I know I was.

I grew up reading Frank DeFord articles in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED for years. He was a great writer.
