Joaquin Jackson, R. I. P. Joaquin Jackson, a 27-year Texas Ranger veteran who gained renown after gracing the cover of Texas Monthly magazine, died Wednesday in Alpine at the age of 80.

Alpine was also the home of Texas transplant, award-winning author and screenplay writer H. Allen Smith. I believe he was also one of the organizers of the Terlingua Chili cook-off. He helped introduce Cincinnati style chili (it contains cinnamon) to the Lone Star State.

I remember the days of the chili wars. Smith and Frank X. Tolbert led the way. And Alpine is now the home of Scott Cupp.
