I Miss the Old Days

50 Years Ago: The Rolling Stones Arrive in America: On June 1, 1964, America was first introduced to a group of five long-haired English lads who called themselves the Rolling Stones. Though they had become a hit in England, the U.S. was only vaguely aware of this new band. Indeed, their first album, ‘England’s Newest Hit Makers’ had only just been released in America two days before their arrival.

I know this is heresy but I've always preferred the Stones to the Beatles. There are many Beatles songs I enjoy but so many of their lyrics struck me as college sophomore stuff or arch posing. I hated "Let It Be" especially. Because of Nam the world was coming apart and McCartney criticized people who railed against it and other injustices. He had all the money and all the women and he didn't want any of those unruly protestors in his way when he was headed for his limo. He said that was what his Grammy always told him when he was upset. I'm sure she gave him hot cocoa with tiny marshmellows in it. For all their many flaws the Stones were not only a better band but more accurately described our generation and its travails personal and political.

The Beatles got slick. I don't think the Stones ever really have. They still have a rough edge or two.
