A couple of those are hardly new trends (revolutionary diet plans, bandwagon-jumping), but I'm pleased to see the shout-out to Steve Martin's 'Born Standing Up'--one of the best celebrity memoirs I've ever read. It's a beautiful book.

Most of these "trends" could be nipped in the bud by application of Flannery O;Connor's dictum: "Everywhere I go, I'm asked if I think the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher."
Present company excepted, of course 8-)
I will have to read the Martin.

This is an easy list to add on to:

1) Memoirs by people who knew Andy Warhol.

2) Books by comedians that amount to notes of their shows.

3) "Political" books that just say how the other side sucks.

4) "Business" books by billionaires who believe in the spirit of America and a flat tax.
