Love that book. I understand McCrumb caught a lot of heat from SF fen over it.

There was a great moment when it won the Edgar. I was there that year, and Nancy Pickard presented the award. She said, "You voted for this book just so I'd have to say the title."

McCrumb told me years ago during a signing that Jay Omega was DEAD (emphasis hers). Alas, no third book in the series.

The only book to win an Edgar because of the title. Beating, among others, The Monkey's Raincoat by Robert Crais. Shameful.

I have it and will maybe read it one of these days, or maybe I read it and have forgotten. It certainly isn't better than Crais' Monkey's Raincoat!

I own that book too. I start to give it away, and then, on second thought, back it goes on the bookshelf. Love it!

Back in the days when I was playing Diplomacy (badly) and reading and publishing Diplomacy zines (less badly - the publishing part that is) Sharyn McCrumb's husband Dave was a frequent contributor to some of the zines I read, and at one time had published one of his own. According to him the book had its roots in the gaming and fantasy and science fiction cons that he'd attend and Sharyn would have to be dragged to if she went at all. And at least some of the characters were based on Dave's FTF gaming buddies in Virginia.

Also, according to Dave the original title was supposedly changed from Bimbos of the Death Star just in case it attracted the attention of George Lucas's lawyers.
