Liberace Update

Michael Douglas to portray Liberace - Films, Arts & Entertainment - The Independent: "On the heels of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and a battle with cancer, Michael Douglas has signed on to portray the flamboyant pianist Liberace in a biopic to be directed by Steven Soderbergh (The Informant!, Che).

Matt Damon is set to play Liberace's lover Scott Thorson. The screenplay is based on Thorson's book Behind the Candelabra (My Life With Liberace)."

Hat tip to Fred Zackel.

Given all the talent involved, Liberace seems a bit of a lightweight subject; couldn't they have come up with something with a bit more depth? I think I'll just rent that awful movie Liberace made ("Sincerely Yours"? "Truly Yours"?) and have friends over to give it the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment.

I think Sincerely Yours is right, Deb.

The film (about a concert pianist who loses his hearing) was a commercial and critical failure, which was attributed in part to his having been overexposed on television.

The other part was that it was a piece of crap.

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon? Maybe if it's played for laughs.

Oh, I was thinking of Michael Sheen. He would be good as a younger Liberace.

Liberace was good entertainer and likable guy on stage.

I had an old 78 of Liberace doing "The Piano Roll Blues." I used to play it quite a lot while in college.
