Another Forgotten Writer

Marilyn in Paris by Rafael Campo | The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor: "It's the birthday of Thomas Wolfe, born in Asheville, North Carolina (1900). He wrote autobiographical novels, including Look Homeward, Angel (1929). In that book, he fictionalized his hometown and the people he knew in it. He cast himself as Eugene Grant, a kid who grew up reading history and adventure books."

Wolfe's work hit me hard when I was a kid.

Faulkner thought Wolfe was the best writer of his generation, not for what Wolfe accomplished but for what he attempted.

I read LOOK HOMEWARD a couple years ago, and was surprised at how it relatted to Ken Kesey's fusion of the Great ASmerican Novel and Greek Tragedy in SOMETIMES A GREAT NOTION.

And who remembers Kesey these days?
