El Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo: "Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Althought the Mexican army was eventually defeated, the 'Batalla de Puebla' came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves of any foreign intervention. Especially those from imperialist states bent on world conquest."

Also, as that bastion of revolutionary ferment C-SPAN reminds us, 5 May is Karl Marx's birthday (May 5, 1818) and the anniversary of Scopes's arrest for heresy (May 5, 1925: Tennessee high school teacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution
using Charles Darwin’s book, “On the Origin of Species.”)

I perhaps should add that C-SPAN3 (the Tres) will be offering 12-hour marathons of programming on Marx and Marxism starting at 8p ET tonight, and on Scopes and Intelligetn Design v. Evolution starting at 8p ET Wednesday. Freud gets the Tuesday slot, for his b-day. (Hmm...I wonder what I meant by that... [a tribute to the weakest non-Chauvinist mid-century joke that didn't involve Alaska having more acreage than Texas]).
