Once Again, Texas Leads the Way

The Herald-Zeitung: "The San Antonio area has been found to be in compliance with the Clean Air Act, becoming the only major metropolitan city in the country which can make that claim.

“I think it’s a monumental achievement for the San Antonio region,” said Pct. 2 Commissioner Jay Millikin, who also serves as chairman of the Air Improvement Resources Committee for the Alamo Area Council of Governments."

Pardon my digression, but "Zeitung"? How come a Texan newspaper carries a partially German name?

Lots of Germans settled in that area in the 19th century. Still a strong influence.

Those German settlers were led by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. There's a little town here called Greune, another called Solms, one called Freiheit, the big water park is Schlitterbahn. After New Braunfels was up and running, Fredricksburg was started deeper in the hill country as sort of a satellite colony...

German ancestry is really big in New Braunfels. San Antonio has a lot as well, highlighted by the historic King William District (re: Kaiser Wilhelm).
