Happy Birthday, Doc Savage!

Mark Evanier at News from Me reminds us that today is the 75th anniversary of the first issue of Doc Savage. Evanier didn't like the novels he read, but I read a number of the reprints and found them a lot of fun. I even liked the George Pal movie.

I've read most of the Bantam reprints and all of the "new" novels by Farmer and Murray. They were a lot of fun. The movie was okay. Personally i thought they could have done better.

I thought the movie had some hints of what a Doc film could be. I'm thinking of Doc chasing the Mayan assassin and the fight on the yacht. I remember hearing that the film was shot "straight" then camped up on orders from the studio.I don't know if that's true or not.

I do know that when my wife and I saw RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK for the first time I said, "THAT'S what a Doc Savage movie should have been!"

Sigh. Maybe one day.

Yeah, it's too bad they didn't do Doc justice in the movie. I liked the movie for certain touches, but it wasn't really Doc.
