Leave it to Beaver Turns 50

Leave it to Jerry 'Beaver' Mathers, Tony Dow - USATODAY.com: "SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Fifty years after they first appeared on TV as Wally and Theodore 'the Beaver' Cleaver on Oct. 4. 1957, Leave It to Beaver stars Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers are still going at it like real brothers.

Discussing the plot of their 1980s reunion series, Still the Beaver, Mathers, 59, recalls that 'Wally was doing very well in his architectural business.'

'No, no,' corrects Dow, 62. 'Wally was an attorney. Since I hate attorneys, they made me an attorney.'

The two friends laugh, making it clear that they also share another brotherly quality: deep affection.

'Fifty is a milestone, like a wedding anniversary,' boasts Mathers, seated next to Dow in the posh TV Land offices where they have come to talk up this weekend's 24-hour 50th anniversary marathon (TV Land, Saturday at 8 p.m. ET/PT)."

It was a very well written show for the time. Seems much better today than its contemporaries. And that's despite the fact that neither boy was a very good actor and their TV mother was never once seem without a dress and pearls.

And heels. Didn't all moms dress like that?

And some FBI directors.

Harry Sheearer tells an interesting story about being cast as Theodore/Beaver and his parents wisely pulling him out of that...Shearer, even at a young age, apparently noted when doing guest roles on the shows focused on kids all the pressure on the child stars...gaffers and associate producers and all standing around anxiously muttering, Wow, the kid doesn't look too good today.

Hi LITB fans,

This GMA piece was shot last Thursday in Los Angeles. The cast had a great time. I was happy to see they had a picture of Ken Osmond in his police uniform.

If you would like more info on: Jerry Mathers, Ken Osmond and Frank Bank you can visit their pages at the Genesis Creations Entertainment website.

Boy, those automatic blog alerts are nice, aren't they?

I clicked one of her links and the first photo to come up was Peter Noone. I was thinking about him just this morning. He hosted some show on VH1 a few years ago and did very well.

Leave It to Beaver was the best show ever. Bad acting? Them's fighting words, Abbott. What helped make the show so good was its quality of acting. And June did show up in slacks a few times, as any true fan knows.
I've never read anything about crew members exerting pressure on the actors, so maybe Shearer missed a good bet, although he's certainly landed on his feet.
I'll be checking out your site, Bonny. Thanks for the heads up.

Barbara Billingsley looks pretty darn good for 91.

And she was great in Airplane.

They said on GMA that she was 92 (I think; I was listening in a hospital waiting room).
