Abebooks: Bestselling Books for the Twentieth Century

Abebooks: Bestselling Books for the Twentieth Century: "Bestselling Books for the Twentieth Century"

Another list. I'm surprised at only one: how did The Virginian get to be the bestselling book of 1952? I'm sure there's a logical reason. OK, I lied. Here's another surprise. I don't remember having even heard of The Broad Highway, the bestselling novel of 1961. I must have been asleep that year.

Don't feel bad about not having heard of THE BROAD HIGHWAY. This is one of several errors on the list. I suspect THE VIRGINIAN being the bestseller for 1952 is another. And I know good and well that THE MATARESE CIRCLE is by Robert Ludlum, not Erich Maria Remarque. Somebody was careless putting this list together.

I didn't even look at the authors' names. Now I'll have to take another look. Maybe the original PW list isn't quite as messed up.

I suspect that Wister's Virginian and Farnol's The Broad Highway were both 50th Anniversary edition. Wister in 1902 and Farnol in 1911 being the original publications. If you have not read The Broad Highway you have missed a really fun read.
